While the town is slowly making its way into the 21st century, the Born Again Bed & Breakfast is attempting to remain in the nostalgic past which permeates the small hometown. Mansfield is the hometown of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the Little House books. Mansfield is where the Little House books were written. It was here that she and her husband, Almanzo, settled and finished out their lives. Their home and grounds have become a showcase and museum visited by thousands each year.

  • Laura Ingalls Wilder Home and Museum is about a mile away. It is open to the public from early spring 'til mid-fall.
  • The Wilder Festival each September includes a pageant, parade, music and contests as well as crafts booths. This is a "must see!"
  • Rocky Ridge Day, in October, is another local festival relating to the historic home of the Wilders; when special celebrities visit the home.
  • Mansfield is only some thirty minutes away from Springfield, Missouri, where you can visit the Bass Pro Shop or the new Wonders of Wildlife Museum. This also means it is close to Branson and Silver Dollar City. There you can shop for antiques or outlet bargains, take in a show or two, or dine at a fine restaurant. Just a short drive from Branson is the Passion Play in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
  • The second Saturday in May is a local festival called Butter Day. This reflects the heritage of the county as a leader in dairy production. It is celebrated with a carnival and a variety of activities; including music, contests and a parade.
  • There are also a number of events found in neighboring communities. Ava (about 11 miles south) hosts the several Festivals in June and views along the Glade Top Trail in October. Ava is also home to the world famous Fox Trotting Horse Breed Association Shows in June and Labor Day week. Ava is also an old town with much colorful history and quaint shops.
  • At Seymour (about a 15 minute drive) you'll find similar types of shops and atmosphere. There is a large settlement of Amish in Seymour. There is also an old country store where you can buy bulk foods and antiques. Down the road is another shop where you'll find Amish handcrafts. In early fall the town has their Apple Fest, with a parade, truckloads of crafts and a real hometown atmosphere.
  • There are other activities and events throughout the area too numerous to document here, such as: Mansfield's Weekly Music Jamboree, Hand-made Quilt Shows, and Antique Auto Shows.

"Things of real value do not change with the passing of years. Remember, it is not the things you have that make you happy; it is love and kindness and helping each other and just plain being good."
Laura Ingalls Wilder

The Born Again Bed & Breakfast, while still a private residence only, was one of a few places regularly visited by Mrs. Wilder for afternoon teas. Afternoon teas are an ongoing tradition at the B&B.
